§ Ethics & scope

The rules of engagement. In plain language.

Legal and medical work both require clear ground rules. Here are ShadowCounsel's, up front, so you know exactly what you're engaging.

Confidentiality

Every engagement is governed by strict confidentiality. Case materials, client identities, and work product remain private to the engaging attorney and any retained experts. ShadowCounsel does not share, publish, or reference case details in marketing, speaking engagements, or sample work product without explicit written permission.

Sample work product provided to prospective clients is redacted. No client names, no patient identifiers, no case captions, no jurisdictions. Samples exist to demonstrate quality, not to expose prior work.

Conflict-checking

Before every engagement, ShadowCounsel runs a conflict check against existing and prior matters. If a conflict exists (direct, positional, or anticipated), the engagement is declined before any case materials are reviewed. Conflict-check information provided during the inquiry stage is itself treated as confidential.

Scope of work

ShadowCounsel provides paralegal, consulting, and expert-finder services. ShadowCounsel is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. All work is performed in support of retained counsel or retained medical experts and does not establish an attorney-client relationship between ShadowCounsel and any party.

ShadowCounsel does not appear as counsel of record, does not sign pleadings, and does not give legal opinions. Work product is delivered to the engaging attorney, who is responsible for its use in the underlying litigation.

AI-assisted workflows

Modern AI tools are integrated into ShadowCounsel's workflows to accelerate review, surface patterns, and draft structured summaries at scale. Every AI-assisted deliverable reference citation is verifiable via hyperlinks to the source document passage from which it came. AI accelerates the work; it does not replace the professional judgment that makes the work defensible.

Client data is never used to train AI models. Your data is your data.

Independence

ShadowCounsel maintains no commission arrangements, referral fees, or financial relationships with any medical expert, legal nurse consultant, or life care planner recommended to clients. Expert recommendations are based on fit and quality only.
